Taxonomy Code

Since most insurance companies do not want the Taxonomy codes on claims, the system default is to exclude it.

However, if you have an insurance company that DOES want the Taxonomy code you'll just want to make sure you have 'told' the system to include it on claims

  • Click "Practice Settings" near the top left-hand menu
  • Click the $ Billing & Insurance tab (at the top)
  • Scroll down to INSURANCE FEATURES and press the button on the right.

  • Find and click on the insurance company
  • Scroll to the bottom and click the  button for the corresponding therapist

As far as actually populating the Taxonomy code on claims (and where it goes on the claim form itself):

If it's the RENDERING Taxonomy – that would go in Box 24J (top) ~

To populate the Taxonomy in 24J (top):

  • Find the CMS-1500 BOX 24J (TOP) field
  • Select [Individual taxonomy code] from the drop-down list

If it's the BILLING Taxonomy code – that would populate in Box 33b ~

To populate the Taxonomy in 33b:

  • Find the CMS-1500 BOX 33B field and select either [Individual Taxonomy] OR [Group Taxonomy] from the drop-down list

One (important) thing to keep in mind –

Billing NPI's and billing Taxonomy codes have to "agree" – meaning if you're billing with a GROUP NPI number, then you also have to use a GROUP Taxonomy code and if you're billing with an Individual NPI, you have to use the Individual Taxonomy.

For example: If you have selected [Group name/address, type 2 NPI and Tax ID] in response to: CMS-1500 BOX 25, 33, AND 33A - you'll want to be sure to select [Group Taxonomy] in response to "CMS-1500 Box 33b".

Don't forget to press the  button at the bottom!
