Telehealth - Apple Gestures and Reactions

Seeing certain figures or effects go on in the background of you or your clients video? Are you using an Apple product? Read on for a fix.

Apple has released a software update and by default enabled Reactions in videos. This can cause unexpected reactions while conducting sensitive therapy sessions.

Read on to learn how to disable this feature.


From Apple:

computer Reactions fill your video frame with a 3D effect expressing how you feel. To show a reaction, make the appropriate hand gesture in view of the camera and away from your face. Hold the gesture until you see the effect.

Requires macOS Sonoma or later on a Mac with Apple silicon, or macOS Sonoma or later on a Mac using Continuity Camera with iPhone 12 or later

Disable Reactions

To disable reactions, when you're in a meeting on a Mac:

  • Click the top menu bar button Video:
  • Then click the green icon beside Reactions:

  • Once you click on that line, it should show a grey icon indicating it's disabled:
